Frank Diebel, Magister

Frank Diebel is sinologist and economist, historian and philosopher, he is married and has two daughters.

Since the turn of the year from 2014 to 2015, Frank lives in the beautiful Garden City of Chengdu, Home of the Giant Panda, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China. He works there at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in the International Office, at the Liberal Arts College, and at the College of International Education.


Current Positions

1. University Marketing in the International Office

In the International Office of SWUFE is Frank in charge of the online marketing. Among others his responsibility includes the planning and development of the non-Chinese websites of the university. Frank also produces the monthly and quarterly newsletters in English language and he communicates with partner universities and cooperative study programs like the MA CEEBS Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies that is run jointly by SWUFE and the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin).

2. Lectures at the Liberal Arts College

At the School of Humanities in the Department of General Education (Liberal Arts College) Frank Diebel teaches History and Philosophy. The two introductory university courses "History of Western Civilization" and "History of Western Philosophy" mainly aim at reaching out for students whose majors are not History or Philosophy. Frank's courses are rather open for all students from all faculties and colleges of SWUFE. In general his lectures are available for everybody who is interested in history and philosophy.

3. Lectures at the International College

At the College of International Education Frank Diebel teaches "Cultural and Political History of China and Europe" which is a module within the international joint Sino-German double-degree study program MA CEEBS Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies. The cooperative joint master program MA CEEBS was co-founded in 2007 both by the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) and by SWUFE. Frank is teaching the Chinese-European history course ever since its beginnings in 2007. Before he moved Frank taught it in Berlin, now in Chengdu.

3. Academic Self-Administration

In the period between 2008 and 2014 Frank Diebel was significantly involved in the development and management of the international further education projects at a university level listed below. The projects where all funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). During that time Frank was also a member of the institute council at the Institute of Management Berlin (IMB) from 2009 - 2011.

1. History of China

Since 2014, in his research Frank Diebel focusses on regional history of Sichuan. Here, in particular, he concentrates on ancient history from the early beginnings to the incorporation, or rather annexation, of the Chengdu Plain into the Kingdom of the Qin in 316 BC.

Education and Command of Language

Being a German citizen and simultaneously a member of the Danish minority who grew up in a border town and harbor city, Flensburg, in the Northern German Land Schleswig-Holstein, Frank was raised bilingual. During his childhood, therefore, he visited German as well as Danish schools, sports clubs, and bilingual societies. During his studies at the Freie University Berlin, he has spent two consecutive study visits to the acquisition of the Chinese language in the People's Republic of China, firstly at the Xiamen University in Fujian, and secondly at the Tongji University in Shanghai.

Meanwhile, Frank Diebel lives with four languages: Because of his origin, he speaks German and Danish, because of a one-year student-exchange visit in the USA during his school days, Frank speaks English fluently ever since. During his office and working hours Frank mostly speaks English, with his family he only speaks Chinese.
